Ewa Beach, Oahu, Hawaii
Client: State of Hawaii, Department of Education
Bowers + Kubota provided construction management services during the construction of a new LEED Gold certified middle school in Ewa Beach, Hawaii. This new, state of the art single building facility includes a library media center, indoor dining facility, outdoor learning gardens, specialty classrooms for music, art, technology, family and consumer science, dance and performance and health fitness, along with an administration area and student center.
- Ewa Makai Middle School is the first school in the State of Hawaii to incorporate a one building concept, creating a mall like atmosphere where children are exposed to continuous stimulus and learning opportunities. It was also the first new school in Hawaii designed for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Certification under the LEED for New Schools 2.0 system.
- The Ewa Makai Middle School project was originally designed for Silver LEED Certification but through the efforts of the Department of Education, the Architect, the Contractor and B+K, enough LEED credits were earned to achieve Gold Certification.
- The Ewa Makai Middle School project is a project of many “firsts.” It’s the first school in Hawaii to be designed with a one building concept. It’s the first school in Hawaii scheduled to become LEED certified. It’s the first school in Hawaii to utilize an energy saving ground displacement AC system. It’s the first school in Hawaii to install pervious concrete in all of its parking lots and fire lanes. But more importantly, it is the social impact of this project that will be its legacy.
