Kakaako Master Plan Demonstration/SALT Project

Honolulu’s epicenter for local culture

As a major land owner in the Kakaako district of Honolulu, Kamehameha Schools envisions their SALT at Our Kakaako as “Honolulu’s epicenter for local culture, food, shopping and innovative events.”

The demonstration project focused on applying the streetscape concepts developed to the site conditions along Ala Moana Boulevard, and Keawe, Auahi and Coral Streets along the frontage for Kamehameha Schools SALT project. Although unconventional improvements such as raised intersections, sidewalk bulb-outs, commercial amenity areas within parking stalls and sidewalks, alternative sidewalk and street paving materials, and modified street lighting were initially considered, a more City-standard design was ultimately developed after City agency input. The project included new street trees, lighting, drainage, and irrigation as well as sidewalk area improvements. Construction of the SALT right-of-way frontage improvements was completed with the curb ramps and intersection signal improvements.
